The painting Passion was created for the cover of the novel Shidō Zanshō (by Hitomi Fujimoto, Chuokoron-Shinsha, 2013).
The project began when the book’s designer discovered Hayakawa’s earlier works and contacted him, recognizing their visual affinity with the story’s atmosphere. To suit the cover composition, he produced this small-scale painting specifically for the design.
The image of a mountain engulfed in flames functions as a visual metaphor for the turbulence of Japan’s late Edo period, while Hayakawa’s abstract approach reinforces the novel’s underlying sense of tension.
